Responsibilities

I led the design of making the rewarding & collaboration experience in MELP fun, easy and consistent.

(

1.

)

Context

MELP is a web-based platform to effectively manage and communicate employee benefits & a self-service mobile application to give teams the benefits they want.

Melp app provides users with:

  • multiple benefit options: by individual, department, tenure, or any other criteria;

  • a wide range of categories where employees can spend their assigned budgets;

  • consolidated supplier invoicing at the end of the period.

I worked on introducing a new functionality — a reward system. To assist businesses in boosting engagement and collaboration among employees.

(

2.

)

Business goal

Currently, Melp app users have a wide selection of benefits to spend their allocated budget on. However, the company would like to increase leads & engagement of users.

Business goal:

Company would like to increase leads by providing the news ways to engage the employees of their business clients. Give businesses a tool to reinforce desired behaviours and boost morale.

Metrics:

  • Increase leads;

  • Increase product-market fit.

(

3.

)

Findings

Melp received insight from their business clients that they would like to enhance engagement among their employees outside a team or department by providing additional benefits to encourage collaboration.

We research the competitors in order to understand what features we should provide with our first version & balance out the resources on that.

Conclusions:

  • The competitors, such as Bonusly or Luck Carrot, do not offer a selection of benefits as extensive as Melp does in the Lithuanian market;

  • The minimum functions we can offer are giving and receiving points. The categories of rewards and compensation for them can be predefined by HR in the Melp management system;

  • A common feed is a solution that aligns with project constraints, and it will help expose employees to one another, irrespective of their departments or teams.

)

User problem

To assist Melp's business clients in encouraging collaboration among employees from different teams and departments, we decided to gain a better understanding of their issues with the current solution. The Melp sales team gathered insights that I categorized into three main problems.

User painpoints:

  • Motivation. Low motivation to help is caused by it going unnoticed;

  • Anxiety. Employees don't know other team members and rarely collaborate; others feel uncomfortable asking for help from someone they don’t know personally.;

  • Unclear terms. Benefit policies for such favors are not clear or effectively communicated.

(

5.

)

Decisions

Tasks flow:

  • In the 'give points' flow, we defined steps users need to take as well as options to choose from. We limited users to choose from predefined achievements due to product constraints;

  • The HR manager will be able to define the list of participants, achievement categories, reward amount, currency (points, kudos, Ice Cream), exchange rate (EUR vs. points), and frequency to renew;

  • For the 'spend points' flow, we used existing purchase functionality.

Recognise your colleague

We explored different solutions for the recognition feed but stopped on a card with the receiver and reward featured at the top.

  • A feed with cards seemed like a faster solution to deliver, and that was important for us;

  • The common feed addresses users' needs to overview other colleagues outside their team and gives ideas for collaboration.

Select a colleague to reward

  • We displayed colleagues alphabetically to avoid favoritism;

  • In the future, we would like to add profile photos and positions for personalization.

Spend points:

I based this flow on an existing solution for benefit purchasing but added exchange rate functionality.

(

6.

)

Outcome

Recognition for contributions has been proven to improve engagement and motivation. Melp provides HR managers with the required tools to shape behavior and communicate the company values by translating them into everyday actions.
